June 22, 2011 “Women are better than men.” Agree? Disagree? Or in the middle? Are women superior to men? Or is it vice versa? Philosophers, and almost everyone else, have been asking this question since humans could talk. What is the answer? In my opinion, women in some ways are far superior to men, but in others they are laughably and distinctly inferior. I will explain. “School officials should not allow cell phones and other electronic devices on campus.” Agree? Disagree? In the middle? Technology changes and society hops along to keep up with it; we try to adapt old rules to new technologies, and it is rarely easy. Many schools have banned iPods and cell phones in an attempt to cut down on distractions. I think this is a losing battle: teach students to use electronic devices responsibly, but don’t ban them. Banning them is the easy way out that does no lasting good besides create resentment. “School officials should not allow hats in class.” Agree? Disagree? In the middle? Alex claimed he needed his hat for confidence two minutes ago in class, and as a teacher I have way better things to do than worry about the choices of hat fashion of my students. Should we expend energy worrying about hats that could be better used in teaching and learning? No, hats are not a big concern to me personally, and scratch my head in confusion at this rule. But as a teacher at Buena I am told to enforce it.
“School wastes more of your time than it uses it wisely and profitably.” Agree? Disagree? In the middle? School is pretty much what you make of it. Better teachers help, better students in class help, nice new school buildings help, but in the end a person either does their best to learn or doesn’t. You can point your finger or blame the teacher or principal, but a person learns as much as they can and they want. If they want it, a person can get an education at Ralph’s grocery store – they have books there! School is only a waste of time if a person allows it to be.
“TV makes you lazy! It will turn you into a couch potato who is out of shape and on the way to an unsuccessful life.” Agree? Disagree? In the middle? TV is not a waste of time or good use of time by itself; it all depends on what one watches. If one watches mindless drivel, then your brain will turn to mush. If you watch the history channel or something else that has value, then you will become smarter and wiser. TV by itself does not cause harm. It is TV watched too often on stupid shows about dumb subjects – but that is what 90% of what America watches, and it is probably not good.
“Amy Chua is a menace to her own children.” Agree? Disagree? In the middle? Amy Chua loves her kids enough to spend huge amounts of time screaming and forcing them to play the piano and violin. If her kids know that she loves them, then almost everything else is appreciated, or at least forgiven. Amy Chua is not a menace to her own children and is, in fact, loved by them. Maybe the menace to their children are all the parents who abandon, ignore, or don’t care much about their children.
